eReader 101 - fundamentals
For those of us not in sync with the world of electronics, ebook readers are devices used to read ebooks, or digital books. Increasingly a variety of material is becoming available and compatible with many ereaders thus enabling the reading of journals, periodicals, magazines and newspapers on such digital devices like kindle, ipad and android tablets. Ebooks also are now written and published by many known and unknown writers thus continuing the evolution of a new genre of professions centering around media and technology. Increasingly, technology has gone "mobile" and so, unsurprisingly, the way we go about doing a lot of things is changing.
Due to their size, eReader users are increasingly able to multitask more efficiently as tasks can be done "on the move," potentially saving time. One might assume there is resultantly related savings and ramifications, some more obvious than others, as paper and printing cost demands are potentially reduced.
eReaders are the interface with which the user connects with a server providing the content, that is, ebook. Of course, ebooks are protected by Digital Rights Management laws and software so as to maintain formal control over who owns, copies, saves, distributes and/or prints the material.
The most basic form of ereader is the pdf reader by Adobe Acrobat, however, ereaders now seem to be breeding with the big players seeming to have settled on a 6" screen as being the most useful size-wise and feature-wise but who knows how long that mindset will last. Perhaps sales figures will figure in there somewhere also as to what receives greater attention and which features are incorporated ultimately.
The latest eReaders feature a touch interface that attempts to create a user-experience much the same as if the reader was reading a regular hardcover. Additionally, users are able to search content, annotate content, share and collaborate with others over a variety of growing online networks. In this regard, eReaders provide a unique experience foreign to readers of traditional books. Some eReaders also include voice reading applications.
Scanning some of the anecdotal evidence on the potential benefits of eReaders users have commented on the following: reduction in paper and printing costs of physical books, digitization of content contributes to environmental sustainability, time efficient device for people on the go, ease of use through portability and increasingly intuitive user interface, suited for all age groups from students to the elderly, evolution of literary occupations, occupational therapeutical benefits yet to be fully realised, etc.
eReaders: A useful and productive "toy" for kids of all ages!
So now that you have a brief background on eReaders, where can you buy a Kindle? Well, at the time of writing, Kindles can be purchased online at t number of places such as Sears and Amazon; they have supplies in stock. BestBuy and Target don't currently provide an option for purchasing Kindles online, while Walmart and CDW Corp require you to contact them first to check price and availability. You might also be interested to check out Ebay as they currently have "used" and "as new" offerings which, considering the 2011 Christmas "washup" of gifts, may well be increasing in the near future. Choose wisely.
